Iran and US are very close to a new deal; the difficulties of lifting the imposed sanctions on Iran
The Biden administration is trying to rejoin the JCPOA by lifting the US sanctions imposed to Iran but it won’t be an easy process at all!
What we know about the negotiations between Iran and Biden administration regarding the sanctions
After Biden’s election in US, the world is waiting to see how he solve one of the mega problems of the international society; the nuclear project of Iran.
According to some senior US officials, US offers to Iran three different packages of sanctions. The first group are ready to be lifted very soon after reaching a new deal on turning back to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) i.e. Iran and 5+1 countries nuclear agreement.
The second group of sanctions are those which cannot be lifted by the Biden administration due to the internal legal system of US.
The third group of sanctions needs more analysis to understand whether they can be removed under the provisions of the JCPOA.
This third group of sanctions are the most hectic and puzzling part of the new round of negotiations in Vienna.
What is the third group of sanctions that cannot be lifted easily by Biden administration?
We do not exactly know about the content of these three groups of sanctions which are currently under negotiation, however, as cited by the US officials, the third group of sanctions i.e. the most difficult one to be removed are those imposed by the Trump’s administration just to make it difficult for the new government of US to easily return back to the JCPOA.
It was, however, completely predictable as Mr. Trump and the members of his cabinet, already disclosed this policy.
The lifting of the third group of sanctions needs the consent of the US Congress. As we know, any sanction relief, right now, will be rejected by the Republicans in Congress. The Republicans in Congress are now trying to turn the Third group of sanctions into law through passing a legislation.
The third group of sanctions are those that normally imposed to Iran for non-nuclear reasons such as support of terrorism and human rights violation. It was the strategy of the previous government of US to impose some part of nuclear sanctions under the other types of sanctions to make them difficult to be removed by the Biden administrations on its sole decision.
The sanctions on financial and banking system of Iran, shipping industry, manufacturing in general and the energy sector are the main example of the third group of US sanctions imposed to Iran.
As already explained by the US officials, any sanction imposed to any entity or individual in Iran and in connection to support and encouragement of terrorism shall stay alive.
